How to Enjoy Alcohol in Social Gatherings Without Overdoing it

Alcohol is a chemical compound formed when yeast ferments the sugars in different food such as grapes, barley, apples, potatoes and beets.

Alcohol is a staple in many social gatherings which when taking in low doses, can stimulate feelings of euphoria and talkativeness that adds an exhilarating effect such gatherings.

However, the downside of such events is that people tend to drink more than they normally would which later leads to feelings of remorse. Alcohol, when taken in huge amounts or too frequently, can ultimately damage your health, weight loss efforts and relationships.

If you are not quite ready to quit cold turkey and want to reduce your alcohol consumption, while still enjoying the company of friends, then the simple solution is to incorporate more water into your drinks.

Here are a few tips you can borrow from:

  • Fill your cup with ice cubes before pouring in your alcohol. The ice cubes will take up quite some space in the cup leaving less space for alcohol.
  •  Commit to drinking a bottle of water after each bottle of beer. This forces you to take some time out before you reach for the next bottle of beer and by the end of the night, you’ll find you have consumed way beer than you normally would.
  • Drink alcoholic spirit instead of cocktails/Liquor.  Spirits mix well with water and since little goes a long way, you get the same euphoric feelings while consuming less alcohol. Go for water-based mixers such as Soda water or water itself to avoid the added calories from sugary mixers such as soda or cranberry juice.
  • Avoid taking shots. They are concentrated, go down quickly and it becomes difficult to track your consumption.
  • Switch things up, declare a day of the week an alcohol-free day. You might get teased a bit by friends, but if you can resist the peer pressure long enough, they will back off and even start to hold you accountable later. You can use this day to rehydrate with water.

Try out as many of these tips as you can to see what works best for you and then run with it. Now you can really drink your alcohol and have it.
